Smash and Grab

busted window iphone

I was afraid of something like this.

Yeah, that's my car, in a well-lit garage in downtown Seattle. I was half a block away, on the set of a movie called A WINDOW, ironically enough.

It's never good when you get a phone call from an unknown number at 8pm on a Sunday. Sure enough, it was the police, telling me my car had been broken into. They found a suitcase and a duffel bag on the roof.

Huzzah.

As you might imagine, there's a lot of stuff in my backseat, so I'm still trying to figure out what's missing. There seems to be a little bit of cash missing and a pair of not-great jeans that were in the duffel bag. But the suitcase was recovered, which is great because it was a birthday present. And there was the box for my T2i, which has stuff in it (not a camera, but enough to give it weight). That was right next to the bags that were taken, but wasn't touched. Weird.

So now there's a big plastic bag on my window, held by gaff tape, and I've got to figure out how to get it replaced, and for cheap.

Anyone want to contribute to the "my insurance probably won't cover this" fund?

UPDATE:

Naturally, my insurance doesn't cover this. The cheapest quote I've found is $288 at SafeLite, but I'm not sure I can get that scheduled before I have to leave. At least do that and get my oil changed. So I'm not entirely sure what to do. How long do I want to roll with a black garbage bag on a window?

UPDATE #2:

With taxes and fees it comes to $327 (I know, right?). But the good news is that we've already raised...

$301

Wow!

Lucas,

Not sure why this matters, but my name is Jason Shine. I signed in with my gmail account, assuming that was enough identity. My comment that Lucas deleted was something like this:

"Lucas, it really sucks that your car got broken into. My car was broken into once and about $600 worth of stuff was stolen that had no value to the thief: plane ticket, glasses, medication, artist-signed music CD, plus the cost of the smashed window. What I did (and the 'I' is capitalized for emphasis) was said, 'dang,' and replaced the items with my meager salary. Maybe it's time to stop begging and get a job like the rest of us."

If you didn't post my comment the first time, then I'm sure you won't post this one. Any other personal identity information you need? Address? SS#? Oh well, its mainly for you to read anyway.

Sincerely,
Jason Shine

Me again. Just thought you'd like this story:
http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2011/09/08/update-man-bikes-around-the-world-with-2-in-pocket/

It's about a guy that biked around the world with $2 in his pocket. He traveled doing the thing he loves, just like you! However, he performed street magic and EARNED his way instead of shamelessly begging. Have a nice, crowd-funded day!

Hello Jason911,

while I respect your personal work ethic, let me say that I am a backer of Lucas' project, exactly because I think what he does is a good job:

Not only does he actually WORK for the indie film productions he is visiting FOR FREE, he also reports about it in various forms. Through this he adds a lot of value not only to the films he works for, but to the indie film making community as a whole.

So, in my eyes, Lucas is EARNING his Year Without Rent, and it is only fair that the community shares the cost for any damage he might experience on his way.

Well said Spoxx.

By all means, keep funding him. Keep the general spirit of crowdfunding alive, Spoxx. This will work out perfectly when you start your own crowdfunding project. In fact, you should call his film a "masterpiece" while you're at it, he'll respond in kind. The baby-boomer generation worked so freaking hard so that we dont have to now! Yay economy! Art all day wheee.

Indie film is truly a circle jerk.
So glad I'm part of the world that actually makes it turn.
